Cavaliers’ Dominance, Central Division Breakdown, and NBA Analytics You Can’t Miss!

[00:05:10] And, now we're going to finish it off by doing the Central and the Southeast.

[00:05:15] And, we're going to be doing that right now.

[00:05:16] A little quick snapshot.

[00:05:19] The Cavaliers right now are 13-0.

[00:05:25] They're playing great basketball.

[00:05:29] Giannis is having a Giannis year.

[00:05:33] Having an MVP level year.

[00:05:35] But, the Bucs are struggling.

[00:05:37] And, the Pacers and the Bulls are in a tight race.

[00:05:43] Where the Pacers just got to 500.

[00:05:46] And, the Bulls had a miraculous victory in the last couple days.

[00:05:51] And, we'll get into all of that.

[00:05:54] But, we're going to first focus in on the Lant.

[00:06:00] Cleveland.

[00:06:02] You're up.

[00:06:04] The first thing that we're going to talk about is that the Cavaliers' offensive rating is 120.9.

[00:06:10] Which is second in the NBA.

[00:06:12] Their defensive rating is 110 flat.

[00:06:16] Which is eighth.

[00:06:18] Their three-point percentage is 41.2%.

[00:06:21] Which is first in the NBA.

[00:06:24] And, it's up from last year.

[00:06:25] Which is 36.7.

[00:06:27] Now, do I think that the Cleveland Cavaliers will shoot over 40% as a three-point shooting team?

[00:06:35] The entire season.

[00:06:38] No, I don't.

[00:06:39] I don't believe that.

[00:06:41] But, they are sharing the sugar.

[00:06:46] Their ball is finding energy.

[00:06:48] You are seeing a team that, because they didn't really have to make a lot of changes.

[00:06:55] This is a team that had its pieces.

[00:06:59] This is a team that has gone through struggles.

[00:07:01] And, knows things about each other.

[00:07:04] As far as where they want the ball on court.

[00:07:06] And, certain spots on the court.

[00:07:08] They're more effective.

[00:07:10] So, you're going to see a lot more cohesiveness.

[00:07:14] You're going to see a lot more fluidity in the way they play.

[00:07:18] And, then, they're going to be able to advance off the stuff that they already done.

[00:07:21] And, what I mean by that is that there's always a counter to the counter.

[00:07:25] The one thing about sports, in general.

[00:07:29] You can take, like, the old cartoon version of Spy vs Spy, right?

[00:07:37] Is that somebody is always trying to get one up on the other.

[00:07:41] So, if you know that there's a person.

[00:07:44] Say, Luka.

[00:07:46] That he likes going to his left.

[00:07:48] Or, he doesn't like going to his left.

[00:07:53] And, he wants to get back to the...

[00:07:55] He wants to get back to his spot.

[00:07:57] He wants to get back to the hand.

[00:07:59] The dominant hand.

[00:08:00] What have you.

[00:08:06] The dominant hand.

[00:08:07] Adjustments.

[00:08:07] He's on the whiteboard.

[00:08:09] There's going to be clips.

[00:08:18] And, talk about the philosophy.

[00:08:20] And, the principles of where you want to place him.

[00:08:24] So, he's not effective with his strong hand.

[00:08:27] I say that.

[00:08:28] To say this.

[00:08:29] Is that when you have a team that is completely.

[00:08:32] Completely comfortable with one another.

[00:08:35] A couple variations of the team.

[00:08:37] But, as far as the core is concerned.

[00:08:39] This is pretty much the same team.

[00:08:42] So, the ability to know where your guy wants the ball.

[00:08:47] And, he's going to be.

[00:08:48] Even if you don't necessarily see him.

[00:08:51] With your peripheral vision.

[00:08:56] Then, the other stuff starts to happen too.

[00:08:59] And, what I mean by that.

[00:09:01] Is that, yes.

[00:09:01] Donovan Mitchell might like to dry the ball.

[00:09:05] On the right hand side of the paint.

[00:09:07] To go up for a layup.

[00:09:09] Or, whatever the case may be.

[00:09:11] Now, obviously.

[00:09:12] There are going to be teams.

[00:09:13] That are going to try to stop that.

[00:09:14] They're going to try to impede that progress.

[00:09:17] Now, what's the counter to the counter?

[00:09:19] And, this is where the offense has blossomed.

[00:09:24] And, we're going to talk about two reasons.

[00:09:26] Why it's blossomed in a second.

[00:09:28] But, I just want to throw that out there.

[00:09:30] So, let's get a couple other little analytic tidbits on other teams.

[00:09:36] Now, Giannis is averaging 33.3 points a game.

[00:09:39] He's also averaging 12 rebounds a game.

[00:09:42] But, their negative 2.5 net rating highlights the defensive shortcomings that they have.

[00:09:49] The Bucs do not have enough perimeter foot speed to handle the guards that are coming in to the paint.

[00:09:58] Or, the wings.

[00:09:59] Or, whatever the case may be.

[00:10:01] Now, we've been talking about Middleton coming back.

[00:10:05] We've been talking about using Andre Jackson.

[00:10:09] We've talked about maybe making a trade.

[00:10:12] Now, obviously, you're not going to really see trades until at least December 15th.

[00:10:18] At least.

[00:10:19] But, a lot of teams want to see the team that they put together.

[00:10:25] Whether flawed, not flawed.

[00:10:28] They want to see it for 30 games.

[00:10:30] Like the little litmus test that NBA franchises give themselves.

[00:10:35] When they are assessing who is a keeper.

[00:10:39] Who is somebody that they visualize as part of the rotation in the future.

[00:10:46] Who are the players that are expendable.

[00:10:50] What is the actual value of these players.

[00:10:53] It takes time to figure this out.

[00:10:55] There's 30 teams in the league.

[00:10:56] So, if you are one of the 30 teams.

[00:10:59] You've got to deal with 29 teams.

[00:11:02] You've got to look at their cap sheets.

[00:11:04] You've got to see if there's any similar salary slots and things of that nature.

[00:11:12] These are all the things that you have to go through before you can even start.

[00:11:16] Hey, let's go ahead and break up a phone call to somebody and say.

[00:11:20] Hey, what do you think about this?

[00:11:23] And we're proposing this to you.

[00:11:26] I don't know where the fix is.

[00:11:28] This is something that we discussed earlier with the Bucks.

[00:11:33] I don't know where the fix is, honestly.

[00:11:37] I think a trade needs to be made.

[00:11:39] And I think that there is a breakup coming of that group.

[00:11:44] Now, I don't know how badly it's going to be stripped to the studs as far as the foundation of the Milwaukee Bucks is concerned.

[00:11:54] But I'll be very interested to see who has value and who doesn't.

[00:12:00] Because Damien Lillard, for all the shortcomings that he has as a defensive player, a scout told me this.

[00:12:08] The one thing that you can't put a price tag on is somebody who can create their own shot and can put the ball in the bucket at a high level.

[00:12:21] So, basically what he's telling me is that, yeah, Dane's market might not be as good as it was like three years ago.

[00:12:29] But he'll still have a market because people still need points.

[00:12:33] They still need production.

[00:12:36] Now, let's move on to the Pacers real quick.

[00:12:41] The Pacers have struggled.

[00:12:43] Tyrese Halliburton seems different this year.

[00:12:46] I don't know if it's necessarily whether he has not adjusted to the physical nature of the game when it changed in, what, February?

[00:12:57] Yeah, February last year.

[00:12:59] Now, I know he dealt with injuries and there was supposedly an injury that he dealt with during, I guess, the Olympic situation or whatever case may be.

[00:13:13] And he's coming back off that and that slowed him down a little bit too.

[00:13:17] But he looks different.

[00:13:22] Their pace of play looks different.

[00:13:25] He doesn't look as decisive as he was last year.

[00:13:29] Now, there's a ton of injuries on that team.

[00:13:32] You don't have Nembhard right now.

[00:13:34] You don't have Neesmith.

[00:13:35] There's a lot of players that are rotational players for the Indiana Pacers that are missing games right now.

[00:13:43] And the guy who's really been keeping them afloat is Benedict Matherin.

[00:13:48] Now, he's thriving in this situation.

[00:13:51] He's shooting 46.5% from three.

[00:13:55] He's also averaging 6.6 rebounds a game.

[00:13:59] Now, Benedict Matherin missed a ton of time last year with an injury.

[00:14:05] He's back this year.

[00:14:06] He is one of those guys that can get nuclear hot.

[00:14:10] He's a guy that can definitely score the basketball.

[00:14:14] He has a lot of sauce in his game.

[00:14:18] My thing is that this team will look a lot different once all the pieces are back.

[00:14:23] And then they're going to have to build continuity.

[00:14:26] That's not just going to come overnight.

[00:14:28] So you're still going to see some struggles.

[00:14:30] And this team might struggle all the way up.

[00:14:35] To, I would say, mid to late January.

[00:14:42] And I'm not saying you're going to struggle and it's going to be a shitty season.

[00:14:46] I'm just saying you're not going to go on that eight-game winning streak or anything like that.

[00:14:52] Now, if you run into some terrible teams, which there are a lot of them in the East,

[00:14:58] maybe you do, maybe you run into a five or six-game winning streak.

[00:15:02] But the real Pacers team, we probably will not see until, I want to say, probably mid-January to late January.

[00:15:14] Now, is there enough time in that?

[00:15:17] Or do you have enough data to make the assessments that there is a necessary trade to be made?

[00:15:24] And have you been able to identify that with all the upheaval that's with your team?

[00:15:31] These are all questions that will have to be answered in the future.

[00:15:36] I want to shout out Fred Katz of The Athletic for spotlighting Garland's defensive improvements in his article.

[00:15:44] I also want to highlight and shout out David Aldridge as well from The Athletic,

[00:15:52] talking about Mobley's expanded offense.

[00:15:54] And we're going to get into that in a second.

[00:15:56] Because we're about to break all the Central Division down.

[00:16:01] The whole division is about to go down.

[00:16:04] So, we're going to start with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

[00:16:07] Why the Cavs 13-0 start is more than a hot streak?

[00:16:12] There's two reasons for it.

[00:16:14] The first one is the Evan Mobley evolution.

[00:16:20] And what I mean by that is that we talked about it all offseason.

[00:16:24] We talked about the influence of Kenny Atkinson.

[00:16:27] And Kenny Atkinson, we said on this podcast,

[00:16:35] in, I want to say July, maybe even, yeah, definitely July.

[00:16:41] We were talking about how this was the guy who put the fun nets together.

[00:16:47] Now, we got a harking back because D'Angelo Russell was on that team.

[00:16:52] That was a Spencer Dinwiddie team.

[00:16:55] They had fun.

[00:16:57] They won some games.

[00:17:00] Jared Allen was on that team, which is interesting because he's on this team.

[00:17:05] And then they had so much fun and they became so productive that the likes of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irvin wanted to join the team.

[00:17:18] Once that happened, Kenny Atkinson was not as impactful in Brooklyn because of the dynamic change and the superstar change.

[00:17:28] I give Kenny Atkinson a lot of credit, not because of the fact that he got fired, not because he acted in some sort of civility that was beyond reproach.

[00:17:43] That's not why I give Kenny Atkinson credit.

[00:17:48] What I give him credit for is that he took a job as an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors.

[00:17:55] And the reason why I think I give him credit is because he went to a team that was dealing with a superstar,

[00:18:05] dealing with a star because there is a separation between Steph and Klay.

[00:18:12] Make no mistake about that.

[00:18:14] Steph is a superstar.

[00:18:16] He's the sun.

[00:18:17] If we're going to talk about planetary whatever, he's the sun.

[00:18:24] Steph is a sun.

[00:18:26] And then Klay can be a planet.

[00:18:29] Klay could be a moon.

[00:18:31] But Klay can't be part of the sun.

[00:18:35] And Kenny Atkinson went there, saw how he could look at an offense, add some things to that offense.

[00:18:44] I think he was instrumental in what Brandon Brzezinski was doing last year.

[00:18:50] And the whole renaissance, or not even renaissance, the unearthing of Trace Jackson Davis, who they got in the second round.

[00:19:01] And he played productive, critical minutes for them, and he's continued to do so this season as well.

[00:19:08] But Kenny Atkinson went to Golden State for multiple years.

[00:19:12] He actually turned down the Charlotte job last season.

[00:19:17] So I say all this to say this, that he has transformed Mobley.

[00:19:22] I will take that, and we will take this out.

[00:19:26] Kenny Atkinson has transformed Mobley into a playmaker, boosting his usage rating to 23.8%.

[00:19:35] His role mirrors Draymond Green's role in Golden State, combining high post facilitation with the defensive versatility.

[00:19:44] Aldridge's quote,

[00:19:45] Atkinson is pushing Mobley to handle and transition and act as a focal point in the five-out sets.

[00:19:53] Here's an advanced stat for you.

[00:19:56] Cleveland's positive 11.7 net rating highlights their balanced dominance.

[00:20:02] And the reason why I want to get to that is because Evan Mobley is shooting more threes.

[00:20:09] Now, it's not this crazy difference that Peyton Pritchard had that we talked about in the last podcast.

[00:20:18] But there is an uptick, and also there's a comfortableness.

[00:20:22] There's a confidence in him shooting that three.

[00:20:26] There is a decisiveness with his playmaking ability and his decision-making on the court, whether he's going to take the ball to the hole,

[00:20:36] or whether he's going to pass to a open three-point shooter, or whatever the case may be, or a cutter.

[00:20:43] But because he has taken ownership of this offense, the offense has gotten more diverse.

[00:20:51] Evan Mobley doing something that we never saw in the first couple years of his career.

[00:20:57] He's demanding the ball.

[00:20:59] He's getting the ball.

[00:21:00] He's being active towards...

[00:21:02] He's being intentional towards the ball.

[00:21:05] And I'm going to kind of peel back the curtain a little bit.

[00:21:11] I've used that word intentional a lot.

[00:21:15] And the reason why is because a lot of the coaches or scouts or whatever that I talk to, they use that word as well.

[00:21:25] And it's almost...

[00:21:27] It's driving home a point.

[00:21:29] It's not only are they focusing on this, it's not that they're really working hard on this, or they put the work in the offseason.

[00:21:38] No, usually when somebody says that they are being intentional about doing something, to me, means like,

[00:21:46] this is something that we probably talked about in the exit interview.

[00:21:51] Or this is something that we have harped on, or our analytics group, or our video coordinator has come up with and cut up some stuff for this player.

[00:22:04] And instead of just looking at it, not applying it, what you're seeing with Evan Mobley is that he's doing all of these things.

[00:22:12] He's applying the lessons.

[00:22:14] He's applying whatever was said in the lead up to the season.

[00:22:20] Obviously, Kenny Atkinson is going to have different marching orders than J.B. Bickerstaff.

[00:22:25] But at the end of the day, I can see that whatever the buy-in is, whatever the actual philosophy is, there's complete buy-in.

[00:22:34] Mobley is doing the things that he's asked to do.

[00:22:37] And he is flourishing in the role that he has been asked to step into.

[00:22:42] So much so that he's averaging 17.9 points a game and 11 plus boards.

[00:22:50] On top of the shooting, on top of the playmaking, and the incredible defense.

[00:22:56] Now, another guy that I want to talk about is Darius Garland.

[00:23:01] Darius Garland's improved strength allows him to fight through screens and stay in front of scorers such as Zach Levine.

[00:23:09] Now, Fred Katz of The Athletic quotes this.

[00:23:12] Garland's stronger and he's staying in front of defenders.

[00:23:15] A key to the Cleveland defense success.

[00:23:18] Advanced stat for Darius Garland.

[00:23:21] Garland's defensive rating improved from 114.2 last season to 108.5 this season.

[00:23:29] Now, I want to go back to last season for one second.

[00:23:32] There were talks about Darius Garland being traded or splitting up Spider and Darius Garland.

[00:23:39] They were talking about, I even talked about on this podcast that having two itty bitty guards in the backcourt probably wasn't a long-term successful situation.

[00:23:50] Now, I understand that down of Mitchell has a 6'11 wingspan and things of that nature.

[00:23:58] So, it makes him a little bit different than a normal 6'2 or 6'3 guard.

[00:24:04] But, there is still a difference in height.

[00:24:06] And, there is still a difference in, you know, whatever your defensive mentality is.

[00:24:12] But, that's all I have to say this.

[00:24:16] Darius Garland had a broken jaw last year.

[00:24:22] He lost 25 pounds because your jaw's wired shut when that goes down.

[00:24:28] I should know.

[00:24:31] And, he lost all this strength.

[00:24:34] He lost all this weight.

[00:24:35] And, he was just being pushed around so terribly throughout the backhand part of the last season that he just looked like a shell of himself.

[00:24:45] He, offensively, he didn't look good.

[00:24:47] Obviously, defensively, he didn't look good.

[00:24:50] Compared to the stark comparison of what his defensive rating is so far this season.

[00:24:59] Now, the supporting cast of Cleveland is also kicking in too.

[00:25:04] Now, you got...

[00:25:06] Now, Struz has been hurt.

[00:25:09] But, Karras LeVert is shooting 45%.

[00:25:13] Isaac Coro has improved his offensive numbers.

[00:25:18] Sam Murrell might be the best outside gunslinger if you're talking about, like, short bursts.

[00:25:32] They don't put him out there a lot.

[00:25:34] But, when he comes out, yo, man, you're gonna put up shots.

[00:25:37] We're gonna need you to hit some threes.

[00:25:40] And, my guy, Sam Murrell, shots out to Wisconsin's zone.

[00:25:47] It was...

[00:25:48] It's just getting it done.

[00:25:49] He's getting up shots.

[00:25:50] It's beautiful to watch.

[00:25:52] I love watching Sam Murrell, man.
